Camera Hot-Shoe Flashes

A speedlite (or speedlight) is a compact, battery-powered camera flash designed to mount directly onto a camera hot shoe or operate wirelessly off-camera:

• High-Speed Flash Output: Emits an intense, momentary pulse of light lasting fractions of a second (often 1/300s to 1/20000s) to freeze rapid motion, illuminate dark scenes, and fill in harsh shadows.
• Articulating Flash Head: Features a tilting and rotating head to bounce light off white ceilings or walls, creating softer, more flattering illumination than direct built-in pop-up flashes.
• On-the-Go Portability: Lightweight and self-contained, making speedlites the standard lighting choice for event, portrait, wedding, street, and location photographers.

TTL (Through-The-Lens) Mode: The camera and flash communicate in real time. Before the exposure, the flash emits a imperceptible pre-flash, measures the light bouncing back through the camera lens, and automatically calculates the exact flash power required. Ideal for fast-moving environments like events, press, and candid portraiture where subject distance changes constantly.

Manual Mode: You manually dial in the exact flash output ratio (from 1/1 full power down to 1/256 or 1/512 power). Power remains completely lock-steady between shots, giving you total consistency for controlled portraiture, studio photography, and off-camera flash setups.

Rechargeable lithium-ion speedlites offer significant performance upgrades over traditional AA-powered units:

• Rapid Recycle Times: Li-ion speedlites recharge at full power in around 1.5 seconds, whereas AA speedlites take 2.5 to 4 seconds.
• Sustained Performance: Li-ion flash power and recycling speed remain constant throughout the battery cycle, whereas AA batteries slow down dramatically as they drain.
• High Flash Capacity: A single Li-ion pack delivers 450 to 650 full-power flashes per charge, replacing the need to carry and manage up to 12 loose AA batteries during a long shoot.
• Direct USB-C Charging: Modern Li-ion speedlite batteries charge directly via USB-C cables or compact charging docks.

Whether you need a wireless trigger depends on where your flash is positioned:

• On-Camera Flash: If your speedlite is mounted directly on your camera hot shoe, no trigger is needed. The camera fires the flash through the electrical pins in the hot shoe.
• Off-Camera Flash: If you want to position your flash on a light stand, inside a softbox, or behind your subject, you need a wireless transmitter (trigger) mounted to your camera hot shoe. Off-camera flash allows you to shape shadows, create dramatic directional lighting, and produce professional studio-quality portraiture.

The Godox 2.4GHz X-system is an integrated radio communication ecosystem built into Godox speedlites, studio strobes, outdoor battery flashes, and wireless triggers (such as the X3, XProII, and X2T):

• Built-in Receivers: All modern Godox flashes feature built-in radio receivers, eliminating the need to attach external receivers to the bottom of your flashes.
• Cross-Brand Master Control: A brand-specific Godox transmitter mounted on your camera (e.g., a Canon-version X3 trigger) can wirelessly control and fire Godox speedlites designed for Sony, Nikon, Fujifilm, or Panasonic, complete with full TTL auto-exposure and High-Speed Sync (HSS up to 1/8000s).
• Multi-Group Management: Allows you to divide off-camera flashes into separate control groups (A, B, C, D, E) and adjust their power output, modeling lamps, and zoom settings directly from your camera trigger up to 100 metres away.
