Optical Snoot FAQs
An optical snoot (also known as a spot projection attachment) is a specialized light-shaping tool that mounts to the front of a COB LED light or studio flash. It uses optical glass lenses to focus, shape, and project light with extreme precision:
- Precision Light Beam Control: Unlike a standard metal snoot which merely narrows light, an optical snoot uses lens elements to project a controlled, high-contrast beam of light without light spill.
- Sharp or Soft Edge Control: Rotating the front lens barrel allows you to adjust the edge of the light beam from a razor-sharp spotlight circle to a soft, gradual blur.
- Creative Background Effects: Designed to hold gobo pattern discs, framing blades, and colour gels to project realistic environmental shadows or dramatic background highlights.
A gobo (short for "Go-Between Object") is a thin, precision-etched metal or glass template placed inside an optical snoot to project patterns and textures:
- Gobo Holder Slot: A metal drop-in holder that secures the gobo disc directly into the focal plane of the optical snoot mechanism.
- Environmental Simulation: Projects realistic background shadows such as window blinds, Venetian shutters, foliage, tree branches, geometric grids, abstract breakup patterns, or custom corporate logos.
- Cinematic Storytelling: Adds immediate visual interest, texture, and spatial depth to plain backdrop walls and portrait backgrounds without setting up physical props.
Advanced optical snoots include built-in controls for precise light trimming and colour tinting:
- Internal Framing Shutters: Four adjustable metal shutter blades built into the projection chamber. Sliding individual blades inward lets you cut and slice the circular beam into precise triangles, slashes, rectangles, or square pools of light without using tape or external flags.
- Drop-In Colour Gel Holders: A dedicated slot that holds heat-resistant colour gel filters. Combining colour gels with gobo pattern discs projects vibrant, multi-coloured background patterns, coloured window slashes, or cinematic gel textures onto your set.
Optical snoots require specific light types and heat management to operate safely:
- Point-Source Requirement: Must be used with point-source continuous COB LED lights or studio strobes equipped with a standard Bowens mount. They cannot be mounted onto flat LED panel lights.
- High-Temperature Management: Concentrated light creates intense internal heat inside the optical chamber. Ensure continuous COB LED lights do not exceed the snoot’s maximum recommended wattage rating (typically up to 300W LED fixtures) to avoid damaging metal gobos or glass lens elements.
- Heat-Resistant Materials: Always use heat-resistant metal or quartz glass gobos and dedicated high-temperature gels designed specifically for high-output continuous video lights.
