The cloth backing tears cleanly by hand in consistent straight strips, so you can cut a length without scissors mid-setup. Its pressure-sensitive adhesive grips firmly on both smooth and uneven surfaces, yet lifts away without leaving residue, which is what separates gaffer tape from ordinary duct tape.
