C-Stand FAQs

A C-stand (Century Stand) is a heavy-duty steel support fixture engineered for rugged studio and location productions:

  • High Load Capacity: Constructed from solid steel to support heavy continuous COB LEDs, large studio strobes, boom arms, and heavy modifiers without bending or swaying.
  • Staggered Turtle-Style Legs: Features three legs offset at different heights, allowing multiple C-stands to be positioned extremely close together ("nested") on set to save floor space.
  • Off-Centre Stability: Designed specifically to handle uneven weight distribution, extended grip arms, and heavy lever forces far better than lightweight, symmetrical tripod light stands.

Pairing a C-stand with a 2.5-inch grip head (gobo head) and extension arm (grip arm) converts the stand into a flexible mounting rig:

  • 360-Degree Angle Control: The grip head uses friction discs and varying jaw cutouts to clamp equipment securely at any angle, from vertical to horizontal or diagonal.
  • Extended Overhead Reach: The solid steel grip arm extends lights, reflectors, or flags out over a set without placing the main vertical column inside the camera frame.
  • Multi-Jaw Compatibility: Features standard jaw hole sizes (such as 5/8-inch and 3/8-inch) to hold mounting pins, flag frames, scrims, and umbrella shafts.

Detachable Turtle Base: The vertical riser column detaches completely from the leg base with a quick twist lock. This allows the legs to fold completely flat for compact travel and lets you mount a light fixture directly onto the low-profile base stud on the floor.

C-stands are versatile grip workhorses used across the entire film and photo set beyond simply holding lights:

Proper setup technique prevents tipping hazards and ensures safety for crew and talent:

  • The Right-Hand Rule: Always position the grip head T-handle on the right side of the column (from the perspective of looking down the arm). This ensures that the downward force of the weight naturally tightens the knuckle rather than loosening it.
  • Leg Alignment: Always point the highest (longest) leg of the turtle base directly underneath the extended boom arm or heavy load to provide maximum forward support.
  • Sandbagging: Always place a heavy sandbag across the highest leg of the base so the weight rests on the leg frame, locking the base securely to the floor.
