Softboxes & Lanterns

Softbox shape changes how light wraps around your subject. Godox softbox lines cover most of it: EazyFlow foldable softboxes and octaboxes give soft, even round light for portraits, while stripboxes narrow that light down for rim and hair light. The Godox QR-Series parabolic softbox uses a deep dish and speedring for punchier, more directional light, and Godox UL-BOX softboxes add tool-free quick-release mounting across octa, strip and rectangular shapes. Lanterns spread light in every direction for shadow-free group and environmental shots.

Softbox FAQs

Softboxes come in various shapes, each tailored for specific light falloff patterns and catchlight shapes:

  • Octagonal (Octabox): Produces natural, circular catchlights in a subject's eyes. It provides ultra-soft, wrap-around illumination, making it the preferred choice for portraits, beauty work, and headshots.
  • Rectangular & Square: Simulates soft window light with straight, clean shadow edges. Ideal for full-body portraits, product photography, and general key lighting in studio settings.
  • Stripbox (Long & Narrow): Projects a narrow slice of soft light. Used primarily as a rim light, hair light, or to create long, elegant specular highlights along the edges of glassware, bottles, and vehicles.

Most softboxes include two removable white diffusion panels to control light softness and output:

  • Inner Diffusion Baffle: Suspended inside the middle of the softbox to disperse the intense center hotspot from the bulb or LED chip, spreading light evenly across the interior.
  • Outer Diffusion Panel: Fits flush across the front opening to further soften shadow transitions and smooth out skin texture on video or camera sensors.
  • Custom Output Control: Using both diffusers delivers maximum light diffusion. Removing the inner baffle increases light output punch and contrast while maintaining a soft overall beam edge.

A honeycomb grid (or eggcrate) is a flexible fabric grid that attaches to the front velcro rim of a softbox:

  • Restricts Light Spill: Narrows the light spread from a wide 120-degree flood down to a directional 40 or 50-degree beam.
  • Background Isolation: Prevents soft key light from washing onto dark studio backdrops, side walls, or flaring into your camera lens.
  • Directional Depth: Keeps light focused strictly on your subject, creating dramatic contrast and deeper, richer shadows without altering the soft quality of the light.

A speed ring is the central metal adapter ring that holds the softbox support rods and secures the modifier to a studio light:

  • Universal Bowens Mount: The most widely used mounting standard for continuous COB LED lights, speedlites, and studio strobes.
  • Swappable Speed Ring Inserts: Many softboxes feature removable speed ring plates. You can swap out the inner ring adapter to mount the same softbox onto Elinchrom, Profoto, Broncolor, or Godox fixtures without buying a new modifier.
  • Quick-Release Speed Rings: Integrated into umbrella-style folding softboxes to open and lock ribs into position in seconds without manually bending tension rods.

Deep Parabolic Softboxes: Built with an elongated parabolic depth and 16 or more structural ribs. They project a punchier, more focused beam of soft light with rapid shadow falloff and perfectly round catchlights, ideal for fashion and high-end portraiture.

Standard Shallow Softboxes: Feature a classic 4 or 8-rod design with a flatter profile. They spread soft light broadly across a wide area, pack lighter, and take up less physical depth in compact home or office studios.
