The 1/8 CTO gel offers the lightest warming effect in the range, shifting daylight-balanced lights to approximately 5000K. It’s a subtle yet effective way to remove a slightly cold cast from your lights, particularly in skin tones, without affecting the overall colour balance too drastically. At 80x100cm and only 0.0055mm thick, it’s easy to cut, layer, or clip into existing setups. Ideal for fine-tuning your lighting when working in controlled studio environments or when mixing light sources with similar colour temperatures.

  • Perfect for creating different effects with photo studio strobe flash and LED lights
  • Enables both additive and subtractive colour mixing techniques
  • Controls absorption and filtering of different wavelengths of light
  • Available in multiple colours for various creative applications

CTB vs CTO Gels

CTO (Colour Temperature Orange) gels are used to warm up daylight-balanced light sources (around 5600K) so they match the warmer hue of tungsten lighting (approximately 3200K). These gels are typically placed over flashes, LEDs, or other daylight-balanced lights when shooting indoors, helping to create a consistent colour temperature across the scene. CTO gels come in varying strengths—full, half, and quarter—to fine-tune the warmth depending on the desired effect or mix of light sources.

CTB (Colour Temperature Blue) gels do the opposite: they cool down tungsten-balanced lights to match daylight. This is useful when using tungsten lights in a setting with natural daylight or daylight-balanced fixtures, ensuring everything blends seamlessly. Like CTOs, CTBs also come in different intensities (full, half, and quarter), allowing for flexibility in colour balancing depending on how much of a shift is needed.

Practical Applications

  • Full CTO (1/1): Use when you need to match your daylight-balanced lights (around 5600K) to tungsten lighting (approximately 3200K). This is common in indoor settings where tungsten lights are prevalent.
  • 1/2 CTO: Ideal for creating a warm ambiance without fully converting to tungsten. Useful during sunrise or sunset shoots to enhance the natural warm tones.
  • 1/4 CTO: Perfect for portraits or scenes where you want a hint of warmth to soften the light, making skin tones appear more natural.
  • 1/8 CTO: Best for situations where the light is slightly too cool, and you need just a touch of warmth to balance it out.
